Problem #1

The first is a new carry-on bag for flights. I’ve been looking for a long time and found a good Victorinox bag in London a year or so ago. I believe it was the following one.

Victorinox

Victorinox

However I have come to change my opinion on what I want. I have come to the conclusion that I do not like zippers on bags. I would rather have an aluminum frame with a sort of suitcase kind of “click-click” lock on it. This is because I never have a use for just opening a little bit of the bag. Either I open it fully or not at all, so a side-clasp kind of lock seems fitting. If someone who travels a lot has opinions on side-lock vs zipper than I’d love to hear them. Because a side-lock only closes the bag in one place I could see that perhaps it becomes a bit weaker in other spots, or if the bag takes a really hard hit and lock breaks then I’m fucked. A zipper seems more stable in a way, but at the same time; if a zipper takes a sharp hit in the side then it can open a little bit and then rip up further.

Anyway, I think I want a side-lock. I want the bag to be hard, either plastic or otherwise. That is, I don’t want a cloth bag.

I found a bag that looked really nice here in Osaka today of the brand Advance, but it felt a bit flimsy and wobbly in the dragging-handle and the quality overall was a bit iffy. It cost about 2000 SEK and was hardplastic and aluminum in the center (around the opening of the bag). It was really cool aluminum too so I wish I could find a picture of it, but I couldn’t. Here is the Samsonite version of the kind of bag I’m talking about.

Samsonite

I’m pretty much willing to pay any amount of money what-so-ever as long as I can guarantee the quality of the luggage is good and it has a really nice design.

Problem #2

3DS

3DS

My second problem is a much more recent desire. For 6 months or so since I’ve been in Japan I’ve been looking a little bit as buying a PSP or Nintendo DS (recently 3DS). I haven’t really been able to justify buying any of them because I really think the graphics suck on both platforms and I haven’t really been able to find any games that I’d actually want to play. I just basically want one because they look cool and seem like fun to play with (you see a lot of people here on the trains playing and stuff).

PSP

PSP

Yesterday I bought a game called Eternal Legacy on the iPhone and it’s in the category JRPG. That means Japanese Role Playing Game, or in other words: run around a lot, do quests, fight random dudes that show up here and there and follow some kind of basic storyline.

I think that game is really fun for some reason. The story is pretty weak, the fighting mechanics are pretty much the same all the time but for some reason I still want to keep playing it all the time. This leads me to believe that the graphics really aren’t that important, and that perhaps I could stand playing on a PSP or 3DS if the game is really good.

The problem with the iPhone is that a game drains a fully charged battery in 2 hours so I almost have to play it with the phone plugged in if I want to be able to use the phone for anything else as well.

Graphics is indescribably better on the iPhone, the resolution is like 3 times larger and the graphics engine just seems so much more powerful. But the reason the PSP and 3DS suck so hard (I assume) is because you can play for at least a full day (which probably means weeks for me) without charging.

Anyway, I want advice from the people that know me and that are familiar with PSP and 3DS. Should I buy any of the platforms? What JRPG games can you recommend (Monster Hunters?) ?

Are there any good JRPGs for the 3DS (or DS in general)?

Are there any other good games for any of the platforms that I might enjoy playing during those lazy mornings when you don’t want to get up until you have too or when you’re on the toilet or train?

I also have some things I’m wondering about region on the platforms and such. Part of me really wants to play a JRPG in Japanese, that would be awesome. But it would also mean that I would have to sit and look things up all the time or just not understand big parts of the story. And if you cut out the story then you only have bad graphics left :P
So if I buy anything I think I want to at least be able to buy a game in English, maybe I’ll try to play in Japanese first and see how that goes, if it sucks then I’m going to want to try to play in english, and that means whatever I buy has to support english region games.

I always went for carry-on-bags with a zipper lock. I only used samsonite in good quality and I can assure you that I was never very gentle or caring about my bags. One I used for 10 years and It never broke. It looked like crap after more than 400 flights. I then bought me a Samsonite model called “Jeddah” with a padded computer compartment on the outside of the bagage so I could take out my computer (with a little computer bag that was included) without open the main bag. This one I still use and its great.
A hard bag for carry-on use isnt that great. I actually used one of those for ONE trip and then realized that it was not that good. A hard bag you cant cram into narrow spaces like you can with a softer zipper one.
Now, thats just me reaction to your thoughts about bags.

Hmm, I guess your right. Didn’t really think about that. Sometimes I use my carry-on back for check-in when I pack to much crap. That is, I put my computer in a backpack and check in my normal carry-on. This is what I did in Seoul so I think I might have thought a bit too much about that situation.

Perhaps hard bags should be kept for check-in.

      I’m gonna check out Jeddah.

Are you talking about a new carry-on bag for flights there is only one alternative in my world a high quality zipper, You can always squeeze in the bag in the store area above the chair or under the chair if necessary, the same goes when you shall share a taxi with a number of friends, it is always to little space and to many bags. The carry-on bag is the bag that contains the bottles you buy “tax free” and you will never be able to close the aluminum bag but you will always find a way with the zipper alternative. The carry-on bag is a squeeze and press bag and as you say yourself don’t care what it cost only the best quality is good enough. I once bought a Samsonite Zipper, I have lived with that bag, I have travelled around the world with it, I have had it as a pillow waiting for cancelled airplanes and I have been sitting on it and still after 20 years it is one of my best friends.

LOL ARE YOU KIDDING ME ?

Yeah, actually the iPhones resolution is 4.7 times higher to be exact. Sorry for the inaccurate number of 3…

THE 3D RENDERING CAPABILITY OF THE PSP IS WAYYYY MORE THAN AN I PHONE , READ UP BEFORE YOU MAKE SUCH LUDICROUS STATEMENTS.

      • http://tetrisrockstar.com/ Fredrik

I sincerely doubt it to be honest. The PSP has a 333MHz 128bit CPU with 64MB memory and the iPhone has a 1GHz CPU with 512MB memory _and_ a separate GPU with support for OpenGL ES.

If you’re unaware of what OpenGL is, some pretty advanced stuff can be done with it. Like Doom 3…

Not saying the iPhone can run Doom 3, but it seems a hell of a lot more likely that it could than with the specs of the PSP.

Since I don’t travel, I know nothing about suitcases so can’t help you there…

When it comes to handheld gaming I think GFX are the least factor to be important. It’s all about content AND usability. From what I read the 3DS will as usual kick ass in content. PSP will be more versatile offering more options then “just gaming”. One of the good reads I found is this post on NowGamer:

Good luck making your decision xD

I have the Victorinox carry-on bag (55cm), and absolutely love it. Not so much because it’s soft or whatever, but because it’s of really good quality. For a carry-on I wouldn’t consider hard-top bags, simply because there’s always something small you want to take out or put in.

However, before moving to the UK I bought some random huge plastic bag, for checking in. THOSE need to be hard-top for sure, since they’re thrown around.

Sorry for the late reply DX

Well, I’m quite a genaral person when it comes to portable game (unlike anime/manga lol), so I don’t really know about them that much.

The most recent game I bought was Dissidia 012: Duodecim Final Fantsy, and it was quite a fun. But I doubt if it’ll work the same way for someone who don’t familiar with FF characters.
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable was nice too!

I’ve never played Monster Hunter, but many Japanese love it so it should be fun, I guess.
Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together got nice score so it seems like a good game.
Also I really want to play Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. It should be awesome!!
(Kuro Hyo Ryu Ga Gotoku Shinshou) looks nice too. You can walk around Kabukicho in Shinjuku as a gang and can experience Yakuza world 8D
Also I think you would like this game since it’s about programming robots!

Some other PSP JRPG’s I’m interested in:
    Valkyria Chronicles II
    Valkyria Chronicles III
    Final Fantasy 4 (how classic~)

    Some other reviews: http://pspmk2.net/list.php?genre=41&sort=point

About 3DS, I don’t have that yet so I don’t know much about it.
Also you should keep in mind that NGP(or PSP2) will out someday in this year (or next year??)

Exempel: Monster Hunter, Zelda, 3D Dot Game Heroes.

Tungt story baserad. Oftast ej vänlig till korta spelsessioner.

Exempel: Final Fantasy, Radiant History, Persona.

Exempel: Morrowing, Oblivion, Fallout, Dragon Age,

Exempel: World Of Warcraft, Warhammer online.

    Kort om varje konsol:

    3DS:

    PSP:

    Mina rekommendationer.

    ARPG:

Half Minute Hero – sjukt kul, kritikerkrossande, spel.

YS 1  & 2 Chronicles, Oath in Felghana samt YS seven. Remakes av den populära YS-serien.

    JRPG:

Final Fantasy IV compilation.
